Projection: need to automatically qualify

St. Bonaventure projects as a team that will need to secure the conference tournament’s automatic bid because its résumé mixes a handful of resume-building wins with too many damaging results away from home and at neutral sites. The Bonnies have shown they can beat quality opponents, with a neutral-site victory over Bradley, road wins at FAU and Buffalo, and meaningful home wins over Colgate and Rhode Island, but those bright spots are undercut by a heavy neutral loss at St. Louis, a difficult neutral outing at North Carolina, a poor neutral result versus Ohio and a string of conference road setbacks at VCU, Richmond, George Washington and others that expose inconsistency outside their own building. With only the regular season finale against Davidson remaining as a chance to add a signature win, the team’s path to the NCAA field runs through a strong showing in the conference tournament.
